Backpack Sprayer Brands

best backpack sprayer review guide

Not all backpack sprayers are created equal.  You really don’t want to sacrifice quality for a few dollars when it comes to comfort, productivity and functionality.

Working professionally or for your own use, performance and reliability are an absolute must.  Even if you do not depend on a sprayer for your job, you still want to get the job done as quickly as possible with the least amount of walking and pumping while still giving good coverage.

With a sprayer, you not only want good spray range but you want to ensure that it is comfortable on your back and shoulders and that it provides efficient pumping so that your arm isn’t tired just after you have started the job.

I provide information that is easy to understand for anybody as I am a consumer too and have done a lot of research on these sprayers!

My four recommended brands for backpack sprayers can be found below along with a detailed review.

Pressure Per Square Inch (PSI)

With the 61800 you can select 30, 45, 60, or 80 psi. You can find the selector is inside tank, but remember that this is a manual pump and not a battery operated backpack sprayer so as your arm gets tired, you may not be applying a consistent force like a battery powered sprayer would.

The 4 gallon translucent tank makes it easy to see the amount of fluid held inside the tank.

The tank has a large opening to make it easier to add and drain liquid from the tank.  It also has a strainer that keeps debris from falling inside the tank.  They have also included an in-tank filter to prevent clogs from getting into the hose.

Padded shoulder straps makes carrying the tank a lot more comfortable.

Stream Size

The Chapin 61800 gives you a 25-Foot Horizontal And 23-Foot Vertical Spray Stream with each pump.

A 3-Nozzle Kit is included with each sprayer which allows you to spray from a fine mist, to a straight stream and to a broad fan.

Chapin PRO Tree and Turf Backpack Sprayer – 4 gallon – Model 61900

Chapin 61900 backpack sprayer guide reviews

This is the most popular pump sprayer that Chapin offers in the weed, garden and pest control area.

It costs less than the battery powered one above because you have to do the work by pumping.  If ease of use and productivity is a priority, then you should seriously consider the battery sprayer.  If you are doing small areas and the budget is tight, then this is the backpack sprayer for you.

This sprayer is designed for the landscaper (weeds, pesticides, herbicides).  This unit is not designed for chlorine or bleach.

The lid is a 4 inch lid (vs 6 inch with the battery operated sprayer above), has a stainless steel wand and a removable filter (for cleaning).

Use rapid pump strokes to prime the pump.  When you feel firm resistance from the pump handle is an indicator that the pressure chamber is filling with liquid.

The complete unit is well made and a great investment.  It’s durable, does the job and Chapin offers a life time warranty on the tank and one year on the parts.

Chapin Bleach and Disinfectant Backpack Sprayer – 61575 -4 Gallon

chapin 61575 bleach backpack sprayer reviews

The Chapin Bleach sprayer (model 61575) is specifically designed to handle the harshness of bleach and fungicides in the tank and flowing through the hose, wand and nozzles.  It can also be used for herbicides and watering.

It’s a piston hand pump model so you will be doing the pumping.

It has a 4 inch wide opening at the top to add your liquids.

For no spraying, there is a safety lock-off feature by pulling up on the handle and turn the red locking mechanism to the neutral position.

The straps are padded, but the downside of this unit, is that there is no padding between the tank and your back.  Hopefully you won’t be wearing it for hours at a time.

chapin sprayer straps

Always empty the sprayer and rinse well with water when you are finished using it.  Never leave chemicals in the sprayer.  Make sure that you spray well as you want to clean out the hose, wand and nozzle as well.  After cleaning, place the unit upside down with the lid off so that any residual water can drain.

If you find that you are getting a funny spray pattern, then the nozzle is probably clogged.  Remove the nozzle, clean it and put it back on.  You should be good to go.

Hudson sp1 backpack sprayer bak pak reviews 2

The Hudson SP1 sprayer is very well rated by it’s customers.

USE: This unit is designed for agrichemicals (herbicides, pesticides or fertilizers) and can also be used with stains and sealers.  Do not use with bleach or disinfectants.  You will need to use the Hudson PS2 sprayer.

Tank Size:  4 gallons or 15 liters.

Durability and Quality

Hudson has an excellent reputation for durability and quality and it is evident by the glowing reviews they get from their customers.  It’s the small things like the metal lever that connects the handle with the diaphragm pump – most companies use a hard plastic lever which breaks easier.

It has a brass wand (not plastic) and brass tip.

Has Viton Sealswhich means what?  Generally speaking, products molded using genuine Viton o-rings provide exceptional resistance to leaks and chemicals.  That is why this sprayer doesn’t leak like less expensive sprayers do.

Sealed Diaphragm Pump – The pumping handle moves the diaphragm up and down to create the pressure in the unit.

Adjustable Padded Straps – the pull tabs help you to easily distribute the weight of the tank on your body.  Hudson has put a lot of thought into their straps in order to provide greater comfort.

Cleaning:  Pour in 1/2 gallon of fresh water and swish around inside the tank.  Pressurize and flush the pumping system until empty to ensure that the hose, wand and nozzle are clean too.

Never store chemicals or water in the unit.  Ensure the unit is clean and empty when storing. For pricing, click here.

What is the difference between the Hudson PS1 and PS2?

The PS1 has a Diaphragm pump where the PS2 has a piston pump.

The PS1 is designed for agriproducts, stains and sealers where the PS2 can be used for agriproducts and chlorine.

PS1 provides pressure at 70 psi and the PS2 provides pressure at a whopping 180 psi.
